About Me
Before settling into my own practice, I worked in a variety of settings including a therapeutic day school, partial hospitalization programs, psychiatric inpatient units, community mental health centers and group private practice. These experiences helped me to find my niche in working with students and professionals who are achievement oriented, self-aware and willing to learn and grow.
My approach to treatment is grounded in client-centered therapy, which is a branch of humanistic therapy. The goal of client-centered therapy is to meet clients where they are at, meaning that I don’t push or tell people what to do, because let’s be honest, no one really appreciates that! Rather, I work collaboratively with my clients to identify problems and develop solutions together. My role as a therapist is similar to that of a co-pilot, where you tell me where you want to go and I’ll point out the routes we can take to get there.
One of the components of client-centered therapy that I really resonate with is the concept of genuineness, i.e. I’m not a stoic “blank slate” kind of therapist. It’s important to me to be authentic during our sessions, meaning that I’m not afraid to show my personality, share my opinions and use humor when appropriate (and don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you don’t laugh at my corny jokes). Research has shown time and time again that having a strong relationship with your therapist promotes the most healing and best outcomes from therapy. I find that being my genuine self helps to build this type of relationship.
In addition to client-centered therapy, I also draw from other approaches including:
Attachment theory
Insight-oriented therapy
Motivational interviewing
Psychodynamic therapy
Relational therapy
I believe that therapy works best when it is personalized to what you need, rather than a cookie cutter approach. After all, you’re the expert on your own life, so therapy should incorporate your unique strengths, values and preferences. Together, we’ll build something that works for you.
